frequently asked questions

Are Massage and Aromatherapy safe?

Both are completely safe when provided by a qualified therapist. All practitioners are fully qualified members of ITEC, and will take the utmost care of you before, during, and after your treatment.

Massage therapists have completed many hours of education which includes a variety of various bodyworks techniques, extensive anatomy and physiology, and knowledge of when massage is and is not appropriate.

How long is a session?

An hour is a common session length. This gives time for a deeply relaxing full body massage, or more in-depth work on a particular area, for example: back, neck and shoulders. A half-hour can be an excellent introduction to bodywork, with plenty of time for a specific area such as back, neck and shoulders or legs and feet. An hour and a half is usually enough time to address the whole body with special attention to a problem area.

Must I be completely undressed?

Some massage and bodywork techniques, like Swedish and Deep Tissue, are traditionally performed with the client unclothed. You will be properly draped during the session.

What should I do during a massage?

Make yourself comfortable. Other than specifically asking you to adjust your position so that we can apply a specific technique, you can change your position anytime to make yourself more comfortable. Most people just close their eyes and relax completely during a session; others prefer to talk. It's your massage, and whatever feels natural to you is the best way to relax. Do not hesitate to ask questions at any time.

What will the massage feel like?

It depends on the techniques used. In a general massage, your session will start with broad, flowing strokes which will help to calm your nervous system and relax exterior muscle tension. As your body becomes relaxed, pressure will gradually be increased to relax specific areas and relieve areas of muscular tension. You should communicate immediately if you feel any discomfort so that another approach may be taken. Massage and bodywork are most effective when your body is not resisting.

Is it normal for massage to cause pain?

During a session we will work superficial to deep, slowly working through the layers of tissues to reach the deeper muscles. Occasionally this will cause minor pain or discomfort, but this should not go beyond what you feel to be acceptable.
