stress

Stress is the wear and tear our bodies experience in life, with physical and emotional effects on us that create positive or negative feelings. On the plus side, stress helps motivate, result in a new awareness and an exciting new perspective. As a negative influence, it can result in feelings of rejection, anger, and depression, which in turn can lead to health problems such as headaches, rashes, insomnia, ulcers, high blood pressure, heart disease, and stroke.

Life events such as the death of a loved one, the birth of a child, a change of job, or a new relationship cause stress as we need to readjust our lives. In so doing, stress will help or hinder us depending on how we react to it. It is not correct that the removal of stress entirely would be an optimal solution: this would leave us unmotivated and in turn create stress on it's own. But everyone at some stage reaches a level of stress that is counter-productive to what they are aiming to achieve.

Stress Management

There are many possibilities for identifying and relieving excessive stress in daily life:

  • Awareness - take note of what causes stress, and how your body responds to it. Does the reaction affect you in positive or negative manner?
  • Reaction - for negative stresses, how can they be reduced or removed entirely? Are there methods (such as more effective life planning) that will help?
  • Perception - are you exaggerating the stress you are under? Focusing on the reality rather than the potential dangers can reduce stress greatly.
  • Physical Fitness - keeping fit, especially with cardiovascular exercise, helps to provide balance in life. Attention to diet (including moderation with certain substances such as cigarettes and caffeine) assists, as does sleep.
  • Emotional Health - mutually supportive friendships/relationships, as well as chasing goals that are right for you, will bring the focus onto where it should be - you.

For day to day stress, the following methods will help to boost the immune system, and hence your defences against stress:
