hypertension

Hypertension (High blood pressure) means high pressure (tension) in the arteries, which carry blood from the heart to the tissues and organs of the body. High blood pressure is generally defined as a level exceeding 140/90 mm/Hg that has been confirmed on multiple occasions. Systolic blood pressure (the top number) represents the pressure in the arteries as the heart contracts, whilst diastolic pressure (the bottom number) is the pressure in the arteries as the heart relaxes after the contraction. The diastolic pressure, therefore, reflects the minimum pressure to which the arteries are exposed.

An elevation of the systolic and/or diastolic blood pressure increases the risk of developing cardiac (heart) or renal (kidney) disease, arteriosclerosis (hardening of the arteries), eye damage, and stroke. These complications of hypertension are often referred to as end-organ damage because damage to these organs is the end result of chronic (long duration) high blood pressure. Accordingly, the diagnosis of high blood pressure in an individual is important so that efforts can be made to normalise the blood pressure and, thereby, prevent the complications.

For some people, blood pressure readings that are lower than 140/90 may be a more appropriate normal cut-off level. For example, in certain situations, such as in patients with long duration (chronic) kidney, the blood pressure is ideally kept at 125/75, or even lower.

Management

The symptoms of hypertension may not be immediately apparent, or if they are, sometimes they will not point directly to the cause - tiredness, dizziness and headaches may all be signs. Once diagnosed, however, attention should be paid to the lifestyle, in particular to reducing stressful activities - office workers in particular. Dietary issues, possibly including weight loss, should also be taken into account.

SAFETY WARNING

If you suspect you may be suffering from High Blood Pressure, consult your doctor immediately. He or she will be able to help diagnose any condition, as well as the cause and the best possible cause of managing it. Your doctor should be consulted before using the below methods, and likewise, if treating or being treated, be sure to take advice on the effects of any medication you may be taking.

Method 1 - Hot Bath

Blend:

Mix the drops of oil above and use 4 drops in a hot bath. If possible, massage can also assist, always moving in the direction of the heart eg. from foot to thigh.
