eczema

Eczema (a term often used interchangeably with Dermatitis) is an inflammation of the skin which causes dryness, flakiness, heat and itching .

Eczema can be caused by a number of different factors, and can affect just a small patch of skin, or anywhere on the body.

The itching can be intense, though scratching should be avoided, as this will make the symptoms worse. Whatever the cause of the eczema, the skin becomes more sensitive, and you may well notice that you are more easily upset by chemicals such as cosmetics, soaps and detergents.

Possible causes include:

  • A general allergic sensitivity called atopy, linked with asthma and hayfever.
  • Contact with substances which irritate the skin chemically , such as detergents, soaps, engine oils, or strong chemicals and cleaners.
  • Contact with substances which the body has become allergic to , such as nickel or rubber.
  • Varicose veins can lead to a form of eczema affecting the lower legs, known as varicose or gravitational eczema.
Treatment

There is essentially no cure for eczema . Severe cases should be referred to your doctor, who may refer you to a dermatologist for specialist treatment. Another approach which will help to minimise your symptoms:
