asthma

Asthma is inflammation of the tubes of the lungs which causes them to be obstructed, making breathing difficult. It is essentially caused by an allergic type of reaction of the immune system, which may be due to a number of factors:

  • Substances to which the individual is allergic eg dust mites, animal fur, horses, or pollen.
  • Chemical irritants such as cigarette/tobacco smoke, pollutants from factories and car exhausts, household cleaners and sprays, and perfumes.
  • Cold temperatures.
  • Exercise.

In children, the condition is often characterised by a cough or wheezing, and it is likely that the allergies have developed early in life.

Prevention & Treatment

Given the causes above, the most obvious method of prevention is to avoid the factors creating the condition! For dust mites, for example, regular (and thorough) vacuuming of the house is a great start.

Most asthmatics will also have an inhaler, which works by expanding the tubes in the lungs during an attack. Children will also benefit from the massage blends outlined below. Dilute each in 30ml of vegetable oil.

To massage, use long sweeping strokes on either side of the vertebrae, starting at the base of the spine. Travel all the way over the shoulders and then back along the sides of the body.
