chamomile

Chamomile (chamaemelum nobile, chamomilla recutita) is the name given to several species of herbs with fine, almost feathery, leaves and daisy-like flowers. The two most common plants used are common or Roman chamomile (chamaemelum nobile) and wild or Geman chamomile (chamomilla recutita) - the therapeutic and psychological effects of the two being quite similar. This similarity extends to their sweet, warm, herbaceous and fruity aroma, with German chamomile being slightly more bitter.

This oil has two main effects, firstly the ability to regulate movement of vital energy, in turn helping to relax the nerves, relieve spasms and ease pains. This can benefit chronic tension, insomnia, nervous indigestion, nausea, constipation, irritable bowel, and headaches. The second action is its calmative effect, clearing heat and reducing inflammation, which can relieve rheumatoid arthritis and earache.

psychological benefits

The energetic influence of the oil is on the solar plexus, the vital centre of our psychological needs and wants. Chamomile can help to relieve nervous stress and the build up of tension in this area. It helps us let go of fixed expectations, calmly acknowledging our own limitations, and more readily accepting the help and support that others give.
