benzoin

Benzoin (styrax benzoin) is derived from trees growing particularly in Thailand and Indonesia. It is obtained by tapping the tree to make incisions into it's trunk, from where a sap exudes and solidifies upon exposure to air. It is a resinoid and preferably used in this form, but using it as an essential oil will suffice.

The aroma is sweet, resinous, balsamic and vanilla-like. It's warming and anti-infectious qualities may help infections of a cold nature, including cystitis and urethritis (characterised by cramping pains and pale, cloudy urine)

Benzoin has soothing characteristics which can benefit chronic bronchitis and asthma of a cold, catarrhal nature. The combination of balsamic and vulnerary properties make it indicated for chapped skin, chillblains, frostbite and cuts.

Psychological benefits

Benzoin is generally considered to be a sedative oil. Rich, sweet and comforting, it softens the mind's 'sharp edges' and gently grounds the soul. Useful for meditation, contemplation and prayer.
